Configuring Your Email in Microsoft Outlook 2002 or 2003 on a DSL Connection
This tutorial covers setting up a new email account in Microsoft Outlook 2002 or 2003 on a computer with a DSL connection, or any other connection that requires the email account to authenticate prior to sending out email through the ISP’s mail server. This means that there are a few extra steps that you’ll need to take to make sure that your Internet Service Provider allows you to send email from your email address.
Before you begin, be sure that you have the following:
- Your email account name and password.
- The account name and password for your DSL provider. This is often the username and password of the email address your DSL provider provided you with.
- The name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server provided by your DSL provider.
- Open up Outlook
- In the upper-left hand corner, click on the Tools menu, and then find and select E-mail Accounts. This will open the E-mail Accounts dialogue box.

- Select Add a new email account, and then click the Next button.

- Select POP3, and then click the Next button.
- This is the screen where we will be entering the bulk of the information regarding your email account. First, look to the User Information highlighted in the graphic below in the green area. In the Your Name field, type the name that will be displayed on all outgoing email messages. People who you send email to will see this as your name when receiving email from you. Beneath the Your Name field, type the complete email address into the E-mail Address field.
- Next, look to the Logon Information section in the same graphic above highlighted by the red area. In the User Name field, type in your full email address. In the Password field, type in your email account’s password. The password is case sensitive, so be sure that it’s typed in correctly.
- Now let’s move to the Server Information highlighted in the graphic above in the yellow area. In the Incoming mail server (POP3) field, type in your incoming mail server name. Unless we’ve told you specifically otherwise, this will always be mail.[insert your domain here]. For instance, if your domains was widgets.com, your incoming mail server would be mail.widgets.com.
- Now you’ll need to pull out some of the information provided by your DSL Provider. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field, place the name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server provided by your DSL provider.
- After completing all of these fields, click the More Settings button in the lower right hand area of the current screen. This will pop up the Internet E-mail Settings screen.
- On the Internet E-mail Settings screen, click the Outgoing Server tab.

- Select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication checkbox and then select the Log on using radio button. Using your DSL Provider’s account login information again, type in the User Name and Password provided to you by your DSL Provider. Be sure to select the Remember Password checkbox, and the click the OK button. This will return you to the previous window displaying the rest of your email account details.
NOTE: Though it varies from provider to provider, this information is often either the full email address they provide to you, or just the prefix of the email address. For example, if your provider gave you an email address of ron@dslprovider.com, the account name may be either ron or ron@dslprovider.com (or it may be something entirely different). Regardless, make sure you get the correct information from your provider. Additionally, passwords are typically case senstive, so be sure that your password is entered correctly as well. - Now, let’s finish up. Click the Next button, which will display the original E-mail Accounts screen.

- Click Finish, and you’re all done!
