Configuring Your Email in Outlook Express on a DSL Connection

This tutorial covers setting up a new email account in Microsoft Outlook Express on a computer with a DSL connection, or any other connection that requires the email account to authenticate prior to sending out email through the ISP’s mail server.  This means that there are a few extra steps that you’ll need to take to make sure that your Internet Service Provider allows you to send email from your email address.

Before you begin, be sure that you have the following:

  • Your email account name and password.
  • The account name and password for your DSL provider.  This is often the username and password of the email address your DSL provider provided you with.
  • The name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server provided by your DSL provider.
  1. Open up Outlook Express
  2. In the upper-left hand corner, click on the Tools menu, and then find and select Accounts.  This will open the Internet Accounts dialogue box.  Once the Internet Accounts dialogue box pops up, go ahead and click on the Mail tab.
  3. In the upper right hand corner of the box, click the Add button, and select Mail.  This will pop up the Internet Connection Wizard
  4. In the Internet Connection Wizard, type the name that will be displayed on all outgoing email messages.  People who you send email to will see this as your name when receiving email from you.  Click the Next button when finished.

Type in your name as you would like email recipients to see it. We'll be using "Ron Weasley" as our sample user.

  5. In the Email Address field, type the complete email address.  Click the Next button when finished.

Ron Weasley's email address is sampleaddress@yourdomain.com

  6. In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server field, type in your incoming mail server name.  Unless we’ve told you specifically otherwise, this will always be mail.[insert your domain here].  For instance, if your domains was widgets.com, your incoming mail server would be mail.widgets.com.

In our example, Ron's domain name is yourdomain.com, so his incoming mailserver is mail.yourdomain.com

  7. Now you’ll need to pull out some of the information provided by your DSL Provider.  In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field, place the name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server provided by your DSL provider.  Click the Next button when finished.
  8. In the Account name field, type in your full email address.  In the Password field, type in your email account’s password.  The password is case sensitive, so be sure that it’s typed in correctly. Click the Next button when finished.

Password are case sensitive, so make sure that the case is correct. If your password is 'Lollipop', entering in 'lollipop' will create a password error.

  9. Click the Finish button, which will cause the Internet Accounts window to be displayed again.

    Click 'Finish'

    Click Finish.

  10. Click on the email account you just set up to highlight it.  Then click the Properties button to the right, which will pop up the Properties window.
  11. In the Properties pop up box, click on the Servers tab.  Make sure that both the Remember password checkbox and the My server requires authentication checkbox are selected as in the figure below, and then click the Settings button to bring up the Outgoing Mail Server window.
  12. Time to get back to your DSL Provider’s account login information again.  In the Outgoing Mail Server window, select the radio box next to Log on using as shown below, and then type in the Account name and Password provided to you by your DSL Provider.  Be sure to select the Remember Password checkbox, and the click the OK button.  This will return you to the Properties window.

The login information provided by Internet provider goes here

The login information provided by your Internet provider goes here.

NOTE: Though it varies from provider to provider, this information is often either the full email address they provide to you, or just the prefix of the email address.  For example, if your provider gave you an email address of ron@dslprovider.com, the account name may be either ron or ron@dslprovider.com (or it may be something entirely different).  Regardless, make sure you get the correct information from your provider.  Additionally, passwords are typically case senstive, so be sure that your password is entered correctly as well.

  13. Now just click the OK button.  This will bring you back to the Internet Accounts window.

Click OK to save your information and return to the Internet Accounts window.

  14. Click the Close button, and you test everything out.  You should be able to both receive and send email.

Just click the Close button, and you're all set!
